come to Polgooth

Polgooth (meaning goose pond in Cornish) is a beautiful, quiet, small, idyllic country village on the south coast of Cornwall. Polgooth is close to many popular attractions including The Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project and only a short drive to the sea with gorgeous beaches and fishing harbours.

Our quaint little former mining village has several now unused mines but records compiled in 1593 lists many well-established Polgooth workings. By the 18th century the village possessed the wealthiest mine in the United Kingdom and was renowned as the world's greatest tin mine. Many of Polgooth’s residents and their families have lived in the village their whole life with many self building and renovated their homes.

Although at first glance, visitors may mistakenly think that not much happens here, they would be surprised to know what does go on. The village enjoys many events throughout the year including the annual wheelbarrow race held in August, a monthly film club, the community garden looked after by local gardening enthusiasts, the fire work display, Christmas Fayre and festive jumper bingo.

Our friendly village shop and Post Office is well stocked with every day essentials, together with locally sourced produce including freshly baked bread, pasties and meats and is open every day including Sunday.

The Polgooth Inn, a 16th century traditional pub is only a five minute walk from the Lodge. The Polgooth offers traditional pub classics and seasonal dishes from an extensive menu with ever changing specials for everyone’s taste.

The pub holds many events right through December including its Christmas Quiz, festive breakfast and New Years Eve party. During the summer months there is live music on Sunday afternoons which are very popular and a lovely way to spend an evening after a busy day exploring Cornwall’s many beaches and quaint villages

There are numerous walks around the village to enjoy the gorgeous views and explore around the tin mines. Charlestown, a stunning, historic harbour is only a ten minute drive away and the long, sandy beach at Pentewan can be  walked to or is a short five minute drive away. So whether you prefer the beach and sea or the countryside, Polgooth has everything for you right on its doorstep.
